One of the best parts about a beach vacation with kids is how easy it is to entertain them with the simplest things.
Sand, water, and a bucket can go a long way. But if you’re looking for something a little more creative that still feels easy and relaxed, this seashell craft is one of my favorite beach activities.
It’s simple, portable, and best of all almost no mess.
All you need are a few supplies and the shells you’re probably already collecting on your beach walks.
The No-Mess Seashell Craft
What You’ll Need
- Seashells (collected from the beach)
- Paint markers
- A small towel or tray
That’s it.
Paint markers are the secret here. Unlike regular paint, there are no brushes, no water cups, and no spills to worry about. Kids can decorate directly onto the shells and the colors dry quickly.
Step 1: Go on a Shell Hunt
Start with a beach walk.
Give the kids a small bag or bucket and let them collect shells they find along the shore. This is half the fun and turns the craft into a little treasure hunt.
Look for shells that are relatively smooth or flat – these are the easiest to decorate later.
Once you get back to the house or condo, just give the shells a quick rinse and let them dry.
Step 2: Set Up a Simple Craft Spot
Lay down a small towel or tray outside on the patio, balcony, or even the kitchen table.
Hand the kids their paint markers and the shells they collected earlier.
That’s the entire setup.
No paint palettes, no water cups, and nothing that can spill onto the floor.
Step 3: Let Them Decorate
Now comes the fun part.
Kids can draw anything they want on the shells:
- Patterns and stripes
- Polka dots
- Tiny beach scenes
- Their names or initials
- Little hearts or stars
Paint markers make it easy for younger kids to control the color, and the shells dry quickly so they can decorate several in a row.
Step 4: Let Them Dry
Most paint markers dry in just a few minutes.
Once they’re dry, the shells become little keepsakes from the trip. Kids can bring them home, display them in a bowl, or even hide them around the house as tiny decorations.
A Simple Beach Memory
Sometimes the best vacation activities are the ones that require almost no planning.
This seashell craft turns something kids already love doing, collecting shells, into a creative little project they can take home with them.
No big mess. No complicated supplies.
Just a handful of shells, a few paint markers, and a moment to keep them busy while waiting for food orders at a restaurant!
